“You gave all your vacation pay to your mother? Then you can spend the holiday with her, and I’m going to the sea!” Anna snapped at her confused husband, setting off a family drama she had never expected.
It all began with an early-morning phone call from her mother-in-law, Lyubov Mikhailovna, who sounded unusually cheerful.
“Anna, please thank Yevgeny for me again. He’s simply gold! What a wonderful son I have. I keep admiring him and being so proud. Be sure to tell him I’m grateful, dear.”
Anna was puzzled. For the past week, all she had heard from her mother-in-law were complaints about hard times and a lack of money. So why was she suddenly praising her son and speaking about gratitude?
Then the truth came out: Yevgeny had supposedly transferred his vacation money to his mother as a gift for her anniversary. Not only that, but he had also helped fund her trip to the sea. According to Lyubov Mikhailovna, the celebration was settled, the hotel room was booked, and in a few days she and her companion, Yegor Abramovich, would be heading south.
Anna could hardly believe it. The money in question was not a small gift or a leftover bonus. It was the couple’s shared savings, the very funds they had planned to use for their own future.
She and Yevgeny had long been dreaming of buying a small house in the countryside. Their apartment, already cramped with two children, left them little breathing room. A home in the village would give them space, fresh air, a garden, and a place to spend weekends and holidays together. They had carefully discussed the plan, and the vacation pay was supposed to be the first step toward making that dream real.
So when Anna learned that her husband had handed those funds over without even telling her, anger and hurt came crashing in at once.
“Two hundred thousand? You gave away all your vacation pay and your salary for the month?”
Her mother-in-law, however, did not see the problem. She calmly explained that a mother is the closest person a son can have, and naturally he would not refuse her. According to her, Anna should simply accept it and not make a scene.

Maybe her mother-in-law had exaggerated. Maybe her husband had not truly given away everything. Yet deep down, Anna already knew this would not end quietly.
When Yevgeny finally called, she asked him where he was and when he was coming home. He answered casually that he was out with friends, celebrating the start of his vacation. Anna nearly lost her patience.
“Celebrating?” she repeated. “Then maybe you should transfer your vacation money to me instead. The house owners are waiting, and we promised them payment this week.”
His tone changed immediately, but the damage had already been done. What should have been a joint family decision had turned into a painful lesson about trust, respect, and boundaries.
In the end, Anna had to face a hard truth: when one partner makes financial decisions behind the other’s back, even a loving family can be shaken to its core. And sometimes the most difficult part is not the money itself, but the betrayal that comes with it.
