A cold afternoon that changed everything
I was twenty-eight weeks pregnant when my sister-in-law, Melissa, locked me out on the balcony and left me standing in the freezing air. From the moment I married her brother, she had treated me as though I had taken something from her. Nothing was ever good enough. My cooking was wrong, my clothes were wrong, even the way I spoke seemed to irritate her. When I became pregnant, her comments only grew sharper. She called me lazy, dramatic, and accused me of exaggerating every symptom for attention.
My husband, Ryan, knew Melissa could be harsh, but he kept telling me to ignore her. “That’s just how she is,” he would say, as if her cruelty was only a personality trait I had to learn to live with.
Thanksgiving dinner and rising tension
That Thanksgiving weekend, Ryan’s family gathered at our apartment because his mother’s kitchen was being renovated. I spent the whole day preparing dinner, even though my back ached and my feet were swollen. By the time Melissa arrived, I was already exhausted. She looked around the room, noticed everything I had done, and smirked.
“Wow,” she said, setting down her purse. “You actually managed to stand long enough to make a meal. That’s impressive.”
I tried to ignore her. After dinner, while Ryan and his father took the trash downstairs, Melissa followed me into the kitchen as I stacked plates. She pointed at the stove and said, “You missed a spot.”
“I’ll get it,” I replied, keeping my voice calm.
She crossed her arms and gave me a cold stare. “You know, women in this family don’t act helpless every time they get pregnant.”
I turned to face her. “I’m not acting helpless. I’m tired.”
Melissa gave a short laugh. “Tired? You’ve been using that excuse for months.”
Locked outside in the cold
Not wanting to argue, I picked up a tray and stepped onto the balcony to retrieve a few soda bottles we had left outside. The moment I crossed the threshold, the sliding door shut behind me. Then I heard the lock click.
At first, I thought it had been an accident. I grabbed the handle and pulled, but it would not move. Through the glass, I saw Melissa standing inside with her arms folded, watching me.
“Melissa!” I shouted. “Open the door!”
She stepped closer and said through the glass, “Maybe a little discomfort will teach you to stop being so weak.”
I stared at her in shock. “Are you insane? I’m pregnant!”
She only rolled her eyes. “It’s just a few minutes.”
The cold sliced through my sweater almost instantly. I started pounding on the glass and calling for Ryan, but the music inside was too loud, and dishes were still clattering in the kitchen. I begged her to let me in. She simply turned and walked away.
What began as a cruel joke turned into a terrifying few minutes that felt endless.
The wind grew sharper. My fingers went numb, then my feet. Fear spread through me as my belly tightened painfully. I kept knocking, crying, and shouting, but no one heard me. Then a strong cramp hit low in my abdomen, and I felt my knees weaken beneath me.
- The cold had already begun to drain my strength.
- My breathing became short and shallow.
- Each second outside felt heavier than the last.
By the time someone finally opened the balcony door, I was no longer standing. I had collapsed on the floor, pale, shaking, and unconscious. What the doctors revealed afterward left the entire family horrified and forced everyone to face the consequences of Melissa’s cruelty.
What happened that day became a turning point for all of us, and no one could pretend it was “just how Melissa is” anymore.
